2010 World Cup seeding: Ranking points

Hopefully this post will make the ranking points in the seeding formula easier to understand.

I compute the November 2009 ranking as if no more matches would be played between now and November 20th.

Honduras is displayed above Slovakia in the December 2007 FIFA ranking.

France is displayed above Portugal in the December 2008 FIFA ranking. However, looking at the actual values (confirmed by FIFA), the order should be Portugal (1007.07), then France (1006.87). That's the order I use for seeding.

Column order:

Dec 2007 rank
Dec 2007 points
Dec 2008 rank
Dec 2008 points

  1. How fair it would be if FIFA used this ranking for their seeding!

  2. I don't understand why you've put France with 24 points and Portugal with 23 points in the 2008 ranking, if it was confirmed by FIFA that Portugal had more points.
If Portugal had 24pts in the 2008 ranking, adding the average to the National Team Coefficients released by UEFA, Portugal would have 57,10 total points against France's 56,90 and would be seeded in the WC.
I'm not sure I'm right, though.

  3. I understand now the National Team Coefficients are not valid for the WC. Is the final version of the performance points for the WC already calculated?

I don't know if it would be fair. Look at this post by scaryice and you'll see older results will have more value than recent ones.

You're right. I did some tests before posting the table and that's why I made this mistake. However, if you look at the seeding table linked at the beginning of the post, you'll see Portugal with 25 points and France with 24.7.

Regarding the performance points, here you go:
