2014 FIFA World Cup seeding for CONCACAF teams (31 January 2011)

Next update: 11 February 2011

As usual with CONCACAF things are constantly changing. The draw won't take place on May 31st as some some papers in Central America have reported, but on July 31st. Which ranking will be used to seed the teams? Well... I don't know.

Here's the intermediate July 2011 ranking - it means the 2007 Gold Cup results are dropped, while the 2009 Gold Cup loses value. Of course, teams involved in the 2011 Gold Cup can climb depending on their performance.

2 USA 530
3 Jamaica 483

  1. It would be retarded if they don't use the May ranking. But CONCACAF may simply not know the huge impact switching from the May ranking will have.

    Sucks if you're Canada...

    Guatemala in Pot C either way, that is pathetic. Guatemala has 14 million people, and the national sport is football. They should be dominating in that region. Instead they barely scraped past Nicaragua to get into the Gold Cup, after failing to even do that last time.

  2. Oops, cancel what I just said. Far better to use a ranking that includes the 2011 Gold Cup. Looks like it was me that didn't understand the huge impact switching the ranking would have!

  3. Thanks, Edgar.

    Interesting the impact of the Central American Cup and Caribbean Cup projecting Honduras and Jamaica to the top of the rankings, while USA, MEX and CAN didn't get any recent tournament points. Wonder if Canada would like to lobby to join one of these tournaments ;-)

  4. Considering the upcoming gold cup will count I suspect the final seedings will look vastly different.

  5. @Dorian

    You're welcome. I forgot to do it on Friday as promised. Sorry about that.

    @Lorric

    Yes, it would be much better to use the July ranking. However, CONCACAF are known to make curious choices.

    @Anonymous

    Yes. The values displayed for each are the lowest possible (losing their remaining friendlies and three matches at the Gold Cup). Yes, I know Guadeloupe is also in the mix, but I don't have the groups yet.
