  2. Boom. England still third :)

  3. Thailand will have 198 points in Oktober (-46 pts compared to September ranking, due to devaluation of past results). Place ? Difficult to say with so much matches on the menu in August and September, somewhere around 140th ?

  4. England's assault on the FIFA World Rankings continues.

    England 2 Italy 1
    Germany 0 Argentina 1

We're coming after you Germany! :)

    Hodgson - P7 W5 D2.

  5. Looks like I made a mistake, but Argentina still won. The result was 3-1.

France 0 Uruguay 0 - England consolidate third, although the gap closes to the now (I believe) 4th place Portugal.

Netherlands barely lose any points for their defeat to Belgium. Shows what a strong base they have. They'll shoot up if they start winning qualifiers.

Croatia and Denmark lost while Russia drew. Points dropped by some outside rivals. The ever-reliable Greece, another nation often lambasted for their high position in these rankings ground out another win and will jump Russia and be right behind Denmark.

  6. I didn't notice this until now, but FIFA have had a pop at explaining England's position in the ranking table:

It's not bad, but it could have been better. People aren't buying what they're selling.

    1. England may not be the most exciting team in the world, but they surely are consistent. The reason people pick at them is because they believe all the propaganda about "England is overrated!111!" and no matter how good England's results are (they have only lost one game since November 2010, and it was a friendly; they also haven't lost a competitive game since Germany in WC2010!), they'll still dispute the place rightfully earned by them.

Now you have to worry about Portugal :) We're closing on you. Hopefully we'll win our qualifying group for once and dispute the 3rd place with you over the next months. Should be exciting :P

    2. Hi. Your name is more fitting for your main rival in that group, Russia. Beware Russia. Capello also got a lot of stick, but pay no attention to that, I was sad to see him go, and I believe he'll make an impact with Russia.

You just have to look what he did for England. Came in to manage a team which couldn't even qualify for Euro 2008 and England absolutely devastated a tough qualifying group. It was magnificent, best football I've ever seen England play. I believe him when he says he made the mistake of tiring England out at the World Cup, but the real problem was the Green mistake in my eyes, and all the crap it brought with it from the press. England played well against the US, people forget that, without that goal, it would have been a pretty comfortable 1-0 win, at least as comfortable as a 1-0 win could be. then had a fearful game against Algeria which ended 0-0. The players were full of fear. They bounced back with one of the best performances of the Capello tenure for me against Slovenia, but it wasn't enough to avoid Germany. Without that fluke goal, and even still with the Algeria perfomance, England would have won the group with 7pts and no goals conceded. Yet because of a fluke goal, the group stage is remembered as pathetic. A new qualifying campaign England went undefeated and won the group. He lost two competitive games for England, and in effect it was only one to the Germans, since England had already won the group when they lost to Ukraine. That match was the only time I had a problem with Capello, he got the tactics badly, badly wrong.

As for your group, I'm sure it's Portugal vs Russia. The rest of the group both teams should be able to handle, it's very weak. I can actually see Russia winning the group. Portugal have a tendancy to drop points to lesser teams, and I just can't see Capello slipping up against the likes of them. I could just imagine Russia winning the group due to Portugal dropping points in Azerbaijan or something.

England once were in a group, and Poland won every single match against the other teams, while England dropped 5pts, but beat Poland home and away to win the group:

      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2006_FIFA_World_Cup_qualification_%E2%80%93_UEFA_Group_6

I would not be too surprised if Portugal had to do the same with Russia.

    3. Clarification, tactics wrong vs Germany, not Ukraine.

    4. I will tell you about the points dropped in World Cup 2012. England drew twice with Montenegro and once with Switzerland.

The home game against Montenegro was first, and this game I believe was pure luck, although Montenegro defended well and fouled intelligently, it was pure one way traffic by England from start to finish with the exception of one shot against the bar by Montenegro.

Switzerland was down to complacency, as away to Switzerland, England produced one of the most enjoyable and dominant perfomances I've ever seen. At home they were complacent, and went 2-0 down before snapping out of it and fighting back to 2-2.

A similar thing happened at home vs Wales. England won 1-0 but were fortunate to do so. In Wales, they won the match in 15 minutes. Up 2-0 after utterly dominating, they ripped the hearts out of a once very noisy crowd and the players on the pitch, and just coasted through the remaining 75mins for an extremely comfortable win.

Last game away vs Montenegro, England's superiority told and they went up 2-0 and were very comfortable despite Montenegro managing to pull one back to 2-1 until Rooney lost the plot and got sent off. England were shaken and Montenegro surged forward and tied it up 2-2 with a late goal.

I was frustrated at the loss of ranking points at the time. Montenegro were very high up the table at the time.

So I guess in summary, maybe some complacency might set in, so if Russia dominate an opponent in the first game, it might be beneficial...

    5. *Euro 2012 qualifying, not World Cup 2012*

  7. I'll tell you this: the portuguese are simply fed up with finishing as runners-up in the qualifying groups for three times now, when they're capable of so much more, so they want that 1st place more than anyone else. Fabio Capello isn't a bad manager, but Paulo Bento isn't either. He brings the spirit in the team and will want to finally conduct a successful qualifying campaign all by himself, ending the complacence that characterizes Portugal at the beginning of the qualifiers, which screws up the entire group campaign. You have to remember that Paulo Bento only stepped in after Portugal gained 1 point in the 2 first Euro 2012 qualifying games. Had Portugal gained at least 4 points in those 2 games and Denmark would likely not have won the group.

Now about the upcoming qualifiers, the russians wanted a local manager, but their federation chose a foreigner once again. While I do think that Fabio Capello brings spirit in his team, he's quite poor in letting the talent loose, as he's too closed in his tactical awareness. Sure, Russia will show some flashes of brilliance here and there, but ultimately I think their talent will not be shown to its full potential, like was the case with Advocaat. I really think that Portugal can and will win the group, so Capello has first to make me eat my own words. Who knows, maybe tne fighting spirit will be enough to contain the portuguese, but I doubt it. We'll see :)

    2. Your group is interesting in that the Russia/Portugal clashes are over at matchday 6. In addition, Russia's hardest matches are also stacked in the first 6 matchdays. Russia should win their last 4 matches. Portugal do not want to be behind Russia at that stage.

      Russia's last 4 matches:

      H vs Luxembourg
      H vs Israel
      A vs Luxembourg
      A vs Azerbaijan

They should walk through that schedule. I don't know if the group was randomly chosen, but if it was decided between the coaches, Russia have shown balls setting up all the tougher matches early.

However, the playoffs are really little threat to Portugal. As a seeded team, they simply have no business losing to whoever they get. They'll almost certainly stongly outclass whoever it is. Flukes happen, but I just can't see any team of that level being able to hang with Portugal over two legs. Obviously you want to eliminate this threat, but the playoffs should pose no threat to Portugal.

I've no idea how England would fare in a playoff. That's another area of consistency. The last time England needed a playoff was in qualifying for Euro 2000, where they defeated Scotland. Portugal finished 2nd in their group that year also, but snatched the best runner up slot.

At the end of the day though, both teams should be seeded in a playoff. The standard of other opposition in the group practically guarantees it, along with practically guranteeing the runner up will not be in 9th. I would be very surprised if this group doesn't qualify both Portugal and Russia to the World Cup.

Portugal lost their last 2 groups to Denmark, but ultimately prevailed over Denmark in the tournaments. Which is why Denmark are still in pot 2 and Portugal are still in pot 1.

    3. It's also worth mentioning that in the period between qualifying for World Cup 1998 and today, England have been 2nd seed in 4 groups, and won them all over top seeds Italy (WC 98), Germany (WC 2002), Turkey (Euro 2004) and Croatia (WC 2012).

    4. When I look at the groups, Turkey made it hard. Like Poland, they won all their matches while England dropped points to Macedonia. England beat Turkey at home, and needed a result on the last day in Istanbul, and got a 0-0 draw to win the group by 1pt.

The wins over Germany and Italy were down to consistency. Germany and England traded wins, but Germany dropped more points to the other teams, allowing England to win the group.

Italy took 4pts out of England, but England were perfect against the other teams and won the group by 1pt.

Of course in 2012, England won the group by being utterly dominant.
