FIFA Ranking: December 2012 probable ranking (II)

Next update: 23 November 2012.

FIFA will publish the ranking on 19 December.

Probable results computed using the Elo Ratings. See the list of results used for this ranking.

No time for the preview today. Of the top 50 only Argentina, Brazil, Australia, Jamaica and Haiti still have matches to play.

Argentina can't move from 3rd, no matter what they do against Brazil, who could be ranked between 16th and 18th depending on the result of the Superclásico de las Américas. A new worst ever ranking for Brazil.

Ecuador (13th) will improve their best ever ranking.
Côte d'Ivoire will return to their best ever ranking.

  1. Why was FYR Macedonia vs Slovenia game excluded from the list?
Slovenia escaped -10 fall, FYRM could climb +5...

    1. Both used 6 subs each so it can't be that. Maybe something with referees?

  2. England get to keep 6th place. However, the gap to falling into 8th has dropped from 57pts to 27pts. Colombia's ascension has made the struggle for the seed places interesting. Looks like there's going to be plenty of jockeying over that 7th spot...

I wonder if Argentina and Brazil are getting sick of the sight of each other yet?

  3. Haiti defeated Grenada. They remain on course for that super inflated ranking.

  4. Yeah, Haiti's current position in ELO-ranking is the 100th spot (11th in CONCACAF). In the FIFA-ranking they are currently 42nd overall and 3rd in CONCACAF.
Both in overall-ranking as well as in CONCACAF-ranking a huge difference!

  5. Haiti lost to French Guyana which will count for ELO ranking but not for FIFA ranking. Looking at their opposition however I just don't see where those big points came from. It's quite obvious many teams are punished for playing friendlies. This is certainly the case for AFC with many regional competitions.

  6. Johnny,

this first time frame Haiti played just 4 matches, all Caribbean Cup qualifiers (no friendlies) and they won all of them (indeed the loss against French Guyana does not count for FIFA), averaging to almost 400 FIFA-points. The opposition is far from impressive (Bermuda, Puerto Rico, Guyana and Grenada), but it does the trick.

Their second time frame was also quite good (weighted 130 FIFA points) with a number of easy WC qualifier-wins (against US Virgin Islands and Curacao) and one, in terms of match-points outstanding, win against Antigua.
These last two years contribute the bulk of the 609 FIFA points they have at the moment.

So Haiti shows it is possible with opposition from the range 100-150 to reach spot 42 in the ranking. Their secret seems indeed to be very modest with the friendlies and win the qualifiers.

Let's wait and see if they can keep it up at the Caribbean Cup finals with stronger opposition. They can at least play their first match in the finals 'for free' as it is the fifth of the first time frame. Another one is against Martinique (no FIFA member) so effectively only one group match could have a real impact on their FIFA points.

    1. Yes, they're Caribbean Cup qualifiers, but what they really are is Gold Cup qualifiers, and that's why they're worth 2.5Xpts. So CONCACAF can have their regional tournaments worked into their confederation championship's qualifying system. The Copa Centroamericana also qualifies teams to the Gold Cup. This is more for Johnny's benefit than yours, Ed.

    2. Lorric, you're right, of course the continental qualifier multiplier is also a very relevant factor in the rise of Haiti.

Btw What is so difficult about preparing a scheme of fixtures for the Caribbean Cup finals and STICK TO IT ? CFU has finally decided to put all the second round group winners together with host Antigua in one group and all the runners-up with champion Jamaica in the other group. A fair decision ?

    3. No. I felt it was fair before, two runners up with the defending champion. That doesn't make sense to me. Jamaica don't need any protection, they're the best team in the Caribbean by a massive distance. In fact, you're punishing the group winners with this, as at least one group winner will go out while one group runner up is now guaranteed a place at the Gold Cup! It's a stupid decision for that last reason more than anything! It has been of greater benefit to be a runner up than a group winner! Antigua and Barbuda have shown the region in World Cup qualifying that they're a tough opponent at home with the USA barely scraping a win there and getting a draw with Jamaica and running Guatemala close.
