AFC member association ranking update (27 February 2015)

After the first match days in the AFC Champions League and AFC Cup.

No association has dropped out of the top 24 - those are the associations eligible to receive direct slots in the AFC Champions League.

More info about the AFC MA ranking.

For the FIFA ranking part I've computed the October 2015 ranking, considering scheduled matches as defeats.

Best movers in the top 24:

2 - Australia and Kuwait

Worst movers in the top 24:

  2. CAF uses their own ranking list to determine the seeds for the AFCON17-qualifiers. If that list is calculated in the same manner as it was calculated for the AFCON15-qualification (the 2015 AFCON finals (weighted by 3) and qualifiers, the 2013 AFCON finals (weighted by 2) and qualifiers (weighted by 0.5), the 2012 AFCON finals, and the 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifiers) then the following points order appears. The details of the qualification process are not published, so the distribution over different pots can not be established yet.

    1 Côte d'Ivoire 48.5
    2 Ghana 43.5
    3 Tunisia 27.5
    4 Nigeria 27.5
    5 Mali 26.5

  3. I see that the format of the qualification process is announced already: 13 groups of 4. Morocco is excluded. The host, which will also be announced on April 8th, doesn't need to qualify, but will be placed in a group nonetheless to play friendlies against their group opponents. The results of these friendlies do not count for the group ranking. I think that Gambia is also still excluded.
So the pots are 1-13 (Gabon has a better record in the AFCON15 qualifiers than Senegal), 14-27 (Morocco excluded), 28-41 (Gambia excluded; Guinea-Bissau has a better record in the AFCON15 qualifiers than Seychelles) and 42-54.

  4. So,if Ghana or Algeria are chosen to host the 2017 edition,we could have a group like this:Ghana,Malawi,Liberia,Somalia and one among Malawi,Liberia and Somalia qualify? It would be a massive chance for these small teams.

    1. Not entirely sure, but I think it's basically the same as the one used for MAs. Seems AFC also take into account play-of games.
