AFC MA Ranking update (23 September 2016)

The 2016 edition of the MA ranking, set to be announced at the end of the AFC club competition season, will be used to determine the slot allocations for 2017 and 2018 seasons. This had been announced by the AFC Competitions Committee on 12 April 2016.

See the previous update (10 June).

Club points updated after the end of the AFC CL and AFC Cup quarterfinals.

FIFA ranking points computed for November 2016, considering scheduled matches as defeats.

Australia climbed from 3rd to 2nd in the East Zone at the expense of China. Good news for Brisbane Roar as they would be entering directly in the group stage.

Jordan have somehow managed to fall from 6th to 9th since the June update. As you know, 6th means a direct CL group slot. As a result, Persepolis (Iran) will skip the play-off round and go straight to the group stage.

Philippines drop out of the top 24th - replaced by Indonesia.

The fight for 6th in the East zone heats up. It's no longer between Hong Kong and Vietnam only, as Malaysia and India have thrown their hats in the ring. Malaysia and India still have their teams in the AFC Cup semifinals, and India have recently become quite knowledgeable about the FIFA ranking. So it will be quite a battle.

Using the same conditions as those in the 2016 AFC CL (i.e. Kuwait suspended; Iraq, Oman, Bahrain, Lebanon and Syria with no licensed clubs), this is how allocations and qualification shape up - assuming Tajikistan's champions get the license. I also assume Tajikistan will be moved to the East - to have 12 MAs in each region.

  2. India did not arrange any friendlies in Oct and Nov. I think they would like to keep their current FIFA point for better position in coming draw of Asian Qualification group stage. Even if Bengaluru can win the AFC Cup 2016, it is not possible for Indian League to get higher MA point than Hong Kong if no friendlies are arranged by the end of Nov.

Also, there is rumours from Chinese websites that the next edition of AFC Champions League and AFC Cup will follow the format of UEFA Champions League / Europa League, i.e. the losers from main round and playoff stages of ACL will join the main round of AFC Cup. The slots allocation of ACL/AFC Cup should be revamped by AFC again at the end of 2016.

    1. It's explained in bold with a bit of red. I use the November 2016 FIFA ranking with scheduled matches as defeats, while AFC use the October ranking. The November ranking will be used by AFC, but obviously, it is not yet available.
