  1. I must say that when you compare the rankings of the old with the new system, I find the old system much closer to the truth after the WorldCup. The rankings need to be sturred up after a big tournament, and not like the new system being finetuned.

But maybe FIFA comes up with a brillant solution for this, we'll find out in just two days.

    1. "...find out in just two days". lol
It is already August. Rankinks still hasn't updated.

    2. FIFA took everybody by surprise when they just didn't update the ranking after the WorldCup without even so much of an explanation. Bad move from FIFA from a communication point of view.

Looking at it from FIFA's perspective, it wasn't a big deal skipping the July rankings because no matches were scheduled in the month after the WorldCup. FIFA bought themselves a month for finetuning the calculation method because they were smart enough to realize that the calculation method they'd published would lead to a ranking which would be heavily criticized.

We just have to be patient.

  2. Why Brazil will be number 1? They were beaten by Belgium in quarter-finals...

    1. Please remember that this is the ranking calculated with the old system. So Brazil will not be number one. Under the new system it's even worse: Germany will remain on top.

    2. The FIFA ranking is far from perfect. That said, having Brazil as number one is not that far-fetched. Brazil has been consistently great in the last year, and a loss against another highly-rated team should not necessarily result in a massive point drop.

The goal of the ranking is to order teams by their perceived strength, not to rank the positions in which teams finished their last world cup campaign.

  3. Here is a ranking that includes only teams that have played in at least a world cup. The winner of each cup gets a number of points equivalent to the teams in that tournament, with second placed teams getting one point less, third placed team getting two points less, and so on. Points are multiplied by one for the first cup, two for the second, three for the third, and so on. The totals are as follows:

    Brazil 5626.00
    Germany 5450.00
    Argentina 4690.00
