FIFA ranking: April 2024 final preview

FIFA will publish the April ranking next Thursday April 4th. I expect the cancelled Asian World Cup qualifier between Korea DPR and Japan in Pyongyang to be awarded 0:3 to Japan and to be included into this ranking.

With regard to the continental final tournaments this Summer the final qualification berths were divided as follows:

- Poland, Ukraine and debutant Georgia qualified for the EURO;

- Samoa qualified for the OFC Nations Cup;

- Costa Rica and debutant Canada qualified for the Copa America.

The US of A won for the third consecutive time the CONCACAF Nations League Final Four.

Two teams will reach a new high in this ranking:

Qatar (34 - 37 in February 2024)

Comoros (117 - 119 in November 2023)

Best movers:

8 - Indonesia

7 - Afghanistan

6 - Libya

Worst movers:

-10 - Vietnam

-6 - Malaysia, Chinese Taipei, Mauritius

Best movers in the top 50:

4 - Czech Republic

3 - Qatar, Russia, Mali

Worst movers in the top 50:

-5 - Scotland, Turkey

-4 - Uruguay

Stay safe and healthy everybody !

  1. Slovenia 2-0 Portugal not included in FIFA ranking. Convenient for Portugal! How much did they pay Čeferin?

    1. I'll assume you're asking why the match isn't included? Unfortunately FIFA don't publish such details, and a general search on the Internet didn't give any good reasons, so unless FIFA publish why, we'll never know and stoke the fires of conspiracy theory.

  3. FIFA excluded the following matches that I included in the final preview:
2024-03-01 Trinidad and Tobago - Jamaica 0:1 friendly in Trinidad and Tobago
2024-03-03 Trinidad and Tobago - Jamaica 0:0 friendly in Trinidad and Tobago
2024-03-14 Kazakhstan - Turkmenistan 2:0 friendly in United Arab Emirates
2024-03-24 Belize - Puerto Rico 3:0 friendly in Belize
2024-03-25 Gabon - Congo 1:1 friendly in France
2024-03-26 Nicaragua - Cuba 0:1 friendly in Nicaragua
2024-03-26 Slovenia - Portugal 2:0 friendly in Slovenia.

Curious indeed this exclusion of Slovenia-Portugal, with 4 subs each nothing extraordinary happened. Also the ref was Bosnian Irfan Peljto, FIFA-approved referee since 2015.
But to make such unfounded, harsh accusations out of the blue, it must be the common present day behavior on internet. Something to ignore as much as possible....

FIFA included the following matches that I excluded in the final preview:
    2024-03-22 Guinea-Bissau - Sudan 0:1 friendly in Morocco
    2024-03-25 Guinea-Bissau - Sudan 2:1 friendly in Morocco

The annulled Asian WC qualifier between Korea DPR and Japan on March 26 in Pyongyang was indeed included in the ranking as a 0:3 awarded win for Japan.

  4. I personally don't believe in bribery, but surely FIFA should clarify why this match (affecting the top 10 placings) is excluded? If they are not accountable for such an (arbitrary?) decision, what's the worth of the ranking, then? I personally thought they'd just made a mistake.

    1. With all respect, I think it's quite naive to think there's no corruption or bribery in football. A general search on the Internet will show you proof of the cases for which people have been banned and even put in prison. FIFA officials are in prison right now and FIFA has itself investigated irregular betting patterns and banned officials and individuals involved. So in terms of proving "corruption" and "no corruption" in football, the former is certainly a lot easier given all the cases that there have been. It would be tough to prove that there is no corruption or bribery in football. That doesn't prove nor suggest that for this case there is proof, but without knowing the details that FIFA chooses not to publish to my knowledge, we're bound to get people speculating. For this specific case things would be at an early stage, but indeed the likelihood of bribery in this case would be small. But my comment was meant as a joke but also to ridicule that FIFA pretty much reserves the right to keep information private that the majority would like to see public. To them "news" is about making a point of how Belgium jumped one place higher in their ranking, but we can all see that. What I bet everyone would like to know about is why certain matches are included or excluded, that's what would make news, and if not, there's going to be speculation about it and them.

  5. Here, people reading such content will now think the FIFA ranking is a joke, because why does Slovenia drop and Portugal rise in the rankings? While it is perfectly possible to go up in the rankings when you lose either because you won other matches or other teams lost more, if you work out the maths you'll realize that even though the news articles mention the loss, it isn't even taken into account for the rankings! https://footballplanet.si/national-team/slovenia-defeated-portugal-but-on-the-new-fifa-ranking-they-have-fallen-keks-team-is-now-the-57th-best-national-team-in-the-world/ and https://www.theportugalnews.com/news/2024-04-04/portugal-rises-up-the-rankings/87611

  6. Is there any place where we can consult the match report by the referees?

I also found strange that the Portugal vs Slovenia wasn't included. As you mentioned, no team made more substitutions than it is allowed, and the ref and two assistants are FIFA approved. The fourth official, however, Dejan Balažič, does not appear on FIFA's list of referees. I wonder if that's enough reason not to include the match? Can't think of anything else.

  7. >Is there any place where we can consult the match report by the referees?

Yes, FIFA headquarters! When I was at their offices in Zurich in 2004 they received match reports by fax, but things have probably changed since then. They also claimed to have all match documentation in their library.

  8. Meanwhile, FIFA rolled out the futsal rankings. I'll try to make the same table.
