FIFA Ranking: July 2010 preview (VI)

Included: matches up to and including July 3rd, 2010.

Next and final update: July 12th, 2010.

Six matches left: two continental qualifiers (Botswana - Chad and Togo - Malawi) and four World Cup matches (two semifinals, 3rd place match and final).

As you perhaps know, the World Cup semifinalists are Uruguay, Netherlands, Germany and Spain.

In the ranking table, the value displayed for these 8 teams is the minimum possible value. This means that even if they lose, their total can't drop.

This is how the points totals could change for the African teams:

Malawi (L: 405, D: 425, W: 466)
Togo (L: 394, D: 421, W: 475)
Botswana (L: 290, D: 304, W: 331)
Chad (L: 116, D: 221, W: 292)

For the World Cup teams it's a bit more complex. Take a look at the table below. Brazil and Argentina included because their ranking (not the point totals) could change.

Team - Minimum points - Maximum points - Worst ranking - Best ranking

Spain 1623 1883 2 1
Brazil 1536 1536 4 2
Netherlands 1531 1799 4 1
Germany 1335 1614 5 2
Argentina 1289 1289 6 5
Uruguay 1152 1444 6 4

Best movers:

24 - New Zealand

19 - Chad

Worst movers:

-39 - Haiti

Four teams will improve their best ever ranking:

Egypt (9th - 10th in January 2010)
Slovenia (19th - 23rd in April 2010)
Burkina Faso (45th - 48th in May 2010)

Uruguay can still improve and climb as high as 4th. Netherlands could also improve their best ever ranking if they climb to the top spot.

Three teams will return to their best ever ranking:

Spain (1st - first achieved in July 2008)
Serbia (13th - first achieved in September 2009)
Venezuela (47th - first achieved in January 2010)

Spain could remain 2nd.

Four teams will have their worst ever ranking:

Romania (42nd - 38th in January 2010)
Tunisia (65th - 56th in March 2008)
Morocco (82nd - 80th in February 2010)
Congo DR (124th - 121st in May 2010)

Ghana climb from 6th to 2nd in Africa and replace Cameroon in the top 5 as Les Lions Indomptables crash from 2nd to 7th. Côte d'Ivoire climb to 3rd, replacing Nigeria on the podium.

Uruguay could take 2nd place in CONMEBOL from Argentina.

Italy out of the European top 5, replaced by England. Portugal drop from 2nd to 5th.

  1. Where would the U.S. be ranked if the Mali ref did not rig a call in the U.S. Slovenia game so the U.S. could not win?

  3. Egypt is in 9th spot although not qualified to world cup. I wonder how it would be ranked if replaced for example Ghana in world cup achieving the same results?!!

Including the two pre-WC friendlies (loss to Netherlands, win against Latvia) and the 5 WC matches: 1093 points - 8th place.

Without the friendlies: 1140 points - 7th place.
