  1. Ha ha ha. It would be amusing if Brazil were to attain that maximum points total. Just 1pt behind Spain! Cue the conspiracy theories...

  2. It's rather impressive that Spain will be #1 even without a major tournament in their 1.0-span.

  3. (slightly schizophrenic comment)

    though I note that it wouldn't have happened without the change in continental coefficient calculation after the 2010 World Cup.

  4. Could someone explain to me what this is, because I do not want El Salvador to go down.

  5. @La Selecta:
    The column which reads "434" for El Salvador is the total points from the June 2011 ranking, as officially published by FIFA.

    The next column is "Minimum points." This is the lowest possible total a team could have in the July 2011 ranking if they would lose all their matches.

    The last column is "Maximum points." This is the highest possible total a team could have in July if they would win all their matches.

    For El Salvador, the minimum and maximum are the same. That is because they don't have any matches scheduled this month, so we can already calculate that they will have exactly 401 points in the July ranking.

    The reason they will lose 33 points is because of revaluation of older results.
    It looks like the biggest factor is probably your 2009 Gold Cup win over Costa Rica (worth 1300.5 raw points) losing value.

    Can this be prevented, though?

    I think it's paranoia, not schizophrenia. I also suffer of it :)

    @Alex

    Thanks!

    @La Selecta

    It's pretty difficult - you'd need 2 wins against Sweden between now and July 21st.

  8. Can someone please explain to me why Germany, Spain and Netherlands all lose more then 100pts when they didn't lose any games and Brazil has yet to win in Copa America, Argentina only won their first game a day ago...

    Better yet, could someone explain how Italy moves up 3 places and 40pts as they lost to Ireland in June. Sure they beat Estonia in a qualifier but they only gained a couple points from that. Why the hell would they gain points from losing to a team 30 places worse then they are. Someone needs to stop screwing up their numbers or FIFA should simply adopt the ELO ranking formula.

    Ever heard of devaluation of points..?

    ReplyDelete
  10. not when they disappear for shits and giggles. logic stated that when a team wins they're rewarded with points and when they lose to a team lower then they are they will lose points...so I repeat why would Italy gain placings and points from losing to Ireland? There's no way Spain deserves to lose 283 points...Netherlands 119 points, or Germany 112 points when their record hasn't changed.

    ReplyDelete
  11. so I repeat why would Italy gain placings and points from losing to Ireland? <--- because it replaces an equally bad L to Slovakia 12 months ago, pretty much.

    (Plus the FIFA rankings actually don't care who you lose to. Strength of opponent is only counted when you draw or win.)

    It's not particularly fair or sane, but it is transparent.

  12. Once again, devaluation of points. You need to look at each timeframe. When points devaluate, the average drops. Last year we had the World Cup in July and the points are devaluated for the most recent timeframe. This works the other way too; when "bad" points are devaluated, the average can go up.
