Defeats for the top team

Spain lost to England this month. They do have a habit of losing friendlies, don't they? They also lost to Argentina, Portugal and Italy. They only lost one competitive match - against the US at the Confederations Cup.

How many times did the top team leave the team defeated (including PSO losses)? 39 times.

Order of columns:

Team - Friendlies - Friendly losses - Competitive matches - Competitive match losses - Total matches - Total losses

Brazil 88 8 107 19 195 27
Spain 14 4 18 1 32 5
France 9 2 8 3 17 5
Argentina 3 0 4 1 7 1
Germany 2 0 5 1 7 1
Italy 1 0 3 0 4 0
Netherlands 0 0 2 0 2 0

Australia caused the greatest upset in a competitive match, while Korea Republic caused the greatest upset in a friendly game.

  1. Don't forget they lost to the Swiss at the World Cup. Or were Spain somehow not number 1 going into the World Cup?

  2. Yes, Spain were second behind Brazil in the April and May 2010 rankings.

  3. Ah yes, the Confed Cup win on the back of a strong qualifying campaign on the back of the Copa America...

Then Brazil go from being in total control against the Netherlands, a team on a monstrous winning streak, to inexplicably falling apart, and the idiots fire coach Dunga for something that wasn't his fault at all. And suddenly Brazil look a whole lot worse. Gee, I wonder why...

It's almost a joke looking at the current Brazil side to even imagine them near the number 1 spot today.
