  1. Well, the ranking for January is published yesterday, but there's something strange going on with regard to Burkina Faso. In the FIFA-results list the WC qualifier BFA-CGO (0:0 on 2/6/12) was awarded 0:3 to CGO. Also the friendly BHR-BFA (0:0 on 26/12/12) is no longer included in this list.

The ranking points of BFA are calculated though as if those changes where not taken into account. Same goes for the points for CGO and BHR.
Is this the first time that there is a discrepancy between the results list and the ranking points ?

  2. @Ed: I believe not. It happened before.

We have to turn our focus to the February ranking and in particular the Africa Cup of Nations 2013 which will be included in that ranking.

And when you calculate the possible result, you will have to come to the conclusion something spectacular could happen. Côte d'Ivoir could shoot into the top 10 to 4th, and meybe even 3rd place. And that would be the highest position an African nation has ever reeched on the rankings.

Nigeria is recordholder for Africa with a 5th place, in April 1994.

So all our attention will be towards the next 3 weeks of the Africa Cup.

  3. Sure hope that happnes. I'm a Ghana fan, but Drogba deserves his trophy. Plus it would cause quite a conundrum as Cote d'Ivoire will be set for a seed at the World Cup under 2010 rules.

    1. With the potential for 3 South American sides also to be seeded, that would mean one group would have to contain 3 European teams.

    2. Such a thing could potentially lead to Europe losing a qualifying spot in the next World Cup.

    3. Not quite. The 13th team would simply be drawn into one of the 4 groups with a non-European seed.

    4. Hmmm. I think I've made this mistake before...

  4. The South American U20 Championship has just reached the end of the first round of competition, and has provided more insight into the changing face of South American football. First round sees 10 become 6. Brazil eliminated. Host nation Argentina eliminated. Bolivia and Venezuela were the other two out.

  5. The reason for discrepancies is that FIFA include results until it is discovered that they weren't registered properly (with proper documents and with proper permission from FIFA or the continental body to play the match).

The ranking date might pass before this improper registration is discovered, and so improperly registered matches find their way onto the rankings. The rankings cannot be modified once they are released, so the mistake is rectified in the next month's edition.

Takes far too long to recognise this, if you ask me. Shouldn't take any more than a day or two to know whether a match has been authorised.

  6. I hope the FIFA rankings are an accurate reflection of the group England have been handed for qualifying to the 2015 U21 European Championship.

    (European Position)

    England (4), Wales (37), Finland (39), Lithuania (43), Moldova (45), San Marino (53)

Does anyone know what happened to the protection for clubs qualified for the previous tournament to be kept out of the 6 team groups? Certainly not complaining with a group like that, but the last bunch of tournaments that rule has been in place and England are qualified for Israel 2013.

  7. @Ed

No, this is not the first time, but in the past they fixed the errors after finding out about them.
