FIFA Ranking: May 2016 final preview

No matches until the deadline, so this is the final preview. FIFA will publish the ranking on 5 May.

Of course, a very quiet month. Belgium have to thank Romanian journalists for keeping 2nd spot.

Gazeta Sporturilor has discovered Romania made 8 substitutions in a November 2012 friendly, lost by the Belgians 2 - 1. The game has now been removed and Belgium gained 12 points and staved off Chile's run to the 2nd spot in the rankings. I think Gazeta Sporturilor should at least receive some complimentary chocolates from the Belgian FA. :)

The March AFC World Cup qualifiers involving Kuwait have been awarded by FIFA and will impact the May ranking. That's why you see Laos being the best mover.

Best movers:

6 - Laos
3 - St. Vincent and the Grenadines
2 - Dominica

Worst movers:

-14 - Kuwait
-6 - Mauritania

Philippines will again improve their best ever ranking, by climbing 1 place to 115th.

  1. Whats about CAF seeding?? No official data from FIfA that June ranking will be puplished in 8-10 June instead of 2nd June. Do you have any confirmation ??

  2. A new Live scores annex fixture list section at FIFA.com. Looks good, if only they would present the correct matchdate for certain matches (see here for an example: Jamaica-Costa Rica wasn't played on March 26th but on March 25th).
In general: matches played in the Americas are NOT played one day later !

I'm curious what the consequences will be for the ranking points in the May ranking if they calculate with these dates :D

  3. If Palestine were to not play a single friendly between now and October- would their ranking trend upwards or downwards?

    1. Palestine has currently no matches scheduled for the rest of this year. With the current total schedule of matches for this year they will climb from around spot 130 in May (271 pts) to around spot 108 in October (299 pts).

  4. Where will Kosova enter as they just got approved by UEFA and on 13th will be approved by FIFA surely. What position then?

  5. You would assume they would be drawn into one of the two 5-team groups (H or I) but I also read that Gibraltar are pushing for inclusion too.
To make it completely fair, FIFA should really draw Pot 6 across the 9 groups again, with the two new teams added to the pot.

    1. Doubt it. Most likely they will skip these qualifiers.
I was thinking in terms of ranking position.

    2. The Council recommended that the Congress admit Kosovo and Gibraltar as the 210th and 211th FIFA members. It was also confirmed that both associations, if admitted at the 66th Congress, would be entitled to take part in the 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, with UEFA tasked to define the modalities of their integration in the preliminary competition.

  6. All new teams enter the ranking with 0 points, thus last.
