We're still a long way off, but it's never to early to start computing the rankings :)
The preliminary draw for the 2010 FIFA World Cup took place on November 25th, 2007 and used the November 2007 FIFA ranking.
Assumptions:
- UEFA will again have 13 spots
- UEFA will again use the system with 9 groups
- FIFA will use the FIFA ranking to seed the teams
- FIFA will hold the draw in November 2011
The November 2011 FIFA ranking will include matches played between November 2007 and November 2011. We already have the "0.2" part (matches played between November 2007 and November 2008) - that's basically 10% of the final ranking and a bit of the "0.3" part (matches played between November 2008 and November 2009). A lot can and will change before November 2011 as there are many matches to be played involving European teams: 2010 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup, 2010 FIFA World Cup, EURO 2012 qualifiers and plenty of friendlies.
This is the November 2011 ranking (for UEFA only) using matches played up to and including March 23rd, 2009.
1 Spain 235 2 Netherlands 161 3 Croatia 150 4 Germany 144 5 Ukraine 135 6 Israel 132 7 Turkey 129 8 Russia 128 9 Italy 119 -------------------------- 10 England 114 11 Switzerland 107 12 Czech Republic 102 13 Poland 101 13 Republic of Ireland 101 15 Bulgaria 98 16 Portugal 97 17 Lithuania 96 17 Sweden 96 -------------------------- 19 Denmark 95 20 Serbia 94 21 Greece 93 22 Romania 84 23 France 81 24 Belgium 74 25 Slovakia 73 26 Hungary 71 27 Slovenia 69 -------------------------- 28 Montenegro 66 28 Wales 66 30 Belarus 56 30 Latvia 56 32 FYR Macedonia 55 32 Norway 55 34 Albania 54 34 Bosnia-Herzegovina 54 36 Iceland 52 -------------------------- 37 Northern Ireland 49 37 Scotland 49 39 Finland 46 39 Luxembourg 46 41 Austria 42 42 Estonia 40 43 Cyprus 36 44 Kazakhstan 34 45 Armenia 28 -------------------------- 46 Georgia 26 47 Azerbaijan 24 48 Faroe Islands 23 48 Moldova 23 50 Malta 22 51 Liechtenstein 5 52 Andorra 0 52 San Marino 0Montenegro really making progress - up 15 places in the regional ranking compared to the March 2009 release. Lithuania (+11) and Belarus (+10) also on the up.
Scotland (-17) , France and Northern Ireland (both -13) have started on the wrong foot.
Possible group of death: Spain, England, France, Norway, Scotland, Georgia
Possible group of life: Israel, Lithuania, Slovenia, Iceland, Luxembourg, San Marino
My guess is that the new UEFA rankings will be used
ReplyDeleteThe 2007 draw was an exception (because the work for the new system was in progress yet).
ReplyDeleteThe new Uefa ranking system will be used for next european and world championships qualifying drawings, as written in Uefa website too.
Hi guys!
ReplyDeleteI was unable to find anything stating the UEFA NT coefficient will be used for the FIFA World Cup qualifying.
This is the link to the uefa.com article: New coefficient system.
"UEFA sees the new, improved system as an important tool for ensuring sporting balance and fairness in both the qualifying phase and final round of the UEFA European Championship. It is used in particular for the pot allocation for the qualifying-phase draw and final-round draw."
This is very interesting too:

I did read the pdf document. Nothing suggests it will be used for the FIFA World Cup preliminary draw.
