EURO 2016 pots: Points needed to stay in current pot

In November 2012 I posted a list with the points needed to climb to the next pot (e.g. from pot 3 from pot 2) for the EURO 2016 preliminary draw.

HÃ¥kon asked me for a list with the points needed to stay in the current pot. Here it is.

Rank

Points needed to stay in the current pot in a no play-off scenario.
Points per game needed in a no play-off scenario
Points needed to stay in the current pot in a play-off scenario.

Pot 1: 31268
Pot 2: 28133
Pot 3: 24381
Pot 4: 19409
Pot 5: 14730

EURO 2012: Castrol Index Bottom 11

During the 2010 World Cup, I posted this after looking at the Castrol Index ranking and the heat maps.

Unfortunately, there were no heat maps for EURO 2012, but here's the bottom 11 (even if some players might be out of position):

EURO 2012: Official final draw seeding

The draw will take place at the Palace of Arts in Kyiv, Ukraine at 18.00CET (19.00 local time) on Friday 2 December.

Pot 1: Poland, Ukraine, Spain, Netherlands
Pot 2: Germany, Italy, England, Russia
Pot 3: Croatia, Greece, Portugal, Sweden
Pot 4: Denmark, France, Czech Republic, Republic of Ireland

Source: UEFA.com

Croatia needed two wins to climb to Pot 2. After their 3 - 0 win in Istanbul I was sure they would overtake Russia, but in the end it didn't happen. I don't know if HNS were aware of this. If anyone from Croatia reads this post, please tell me if it was reported in the press that Croatia need two wins to climb to Pot 2. Thanks!

Poland will be automatically placed in Group A as A1, Ukraine in Group D as D1.

The draw will start with Pot 1 in order to fill position one in Groups B and C. The draw will continue with Pot 4, from which a team will be allocated to each group consecutively, from Group A to Group D. This procedure will then be repeated for Pot 3 and finally for Pot 2.

The position of each team within its group (2, 3 or 4) will also be determined during the draw.

EURO 2012 qualifying: 24 teams outcome

Most of this article is based on fillow's post on Bert Kassies forum.

Who would have qualified for a 2012 EURO with 24 teams?

The two hosts, 9 group winners, 9 group runners-up and 4 teams from play-offs between the best third placed teams.

Ranking of third placed teams discarding results against the sixth ranked team in the group where applicable:

Norway 16 10 - 7
Hungary 13 11 - 14
Armenia 11 15 - 10
Switzerland 11 12 - 10
Scotland 11 9 - 10
Israel 10 8 - 10
Belgium 9 15 - 14
Serbia 9 7 - 11
Romania 8 8 - 8

Romania out as the worst third placed team. Yes, Romania :)

Seeding for the play-offs:

Serbia 27975
Switzerland 27745
Norway 27093

-----------------
Hungary 26110
Scotland 24426
Belgium 22539
Armenia 19746

Assuming the seeds would have qualified with a win and a draw, these would have been the pots for the final draw:

Poland 23086
Ukraine 28029
Spain 43116

Montenegro 21876
Estonia 20354

Pot 1: Poland, Ukraine, Spain, Netherlands, Germany, Italy
Pot 2: England, Russia, Croatia, Greece, Sweden, Denmark
Pot 3: Portugal, France, Switzerland, Serbia, Ireland, Czech Republic
Pot 4: Israel, Turkey, Norway, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Montenegro, Estonia

So who's waiting eagerly for the 2016 edition? Taking into account the latest preliminaries and my previous post about the EURO expansion, these are the top 10 teams that will benefit: Ireland, Scotland, Norway, Serbia, Turkey, Israel, Northern Ireland, Belgium, England and Croatia.

EURO 2012: How the play-offs affect the pots

France will root for Bosnia-Herzegovina... Isn't that something :)

Sure to be in pot 4 if they qualify: Czech Republic, Republic of Ireland, Turkey, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Montenegro and Estonia.

That leaves Croatia and Portugal as the ones that could push teams to a lower pot.

Teams that could be affected: Russia, Denmark and France.

So who's safe?

Pot 1: Poland, Ukraine, Spain, Netherlands
Pot 2: Germany, Italy, England
Pot 3: Greece, Sweden
Pot 4: All play-off teams, bar Croatia and Portugal

Russia

Pot 2: If Croatia don't get two wins against Turkey
Pot 3: If Croatia qualify with two wins against Turkey

Croatia

Pot 2: If they qualify with two wins against Turkey
Pot 3: If they qualify but not with two wins against Turkey

Denmark

Pot 3: If Croatia don't qualify or Portugal don't get a win against Bosnia-Herzegovina
Pot 4: If Croatia qualify and Portugal qualify with at least one win

Portugal

Pot 3: If they get at least one win or (they qualify with two draws and Croatia don't qualify)
Pot 4: If they qualify with two draws and Croatia qualify

France

Pot 3: If Croatia and Portugal don't qualify
Pot 4: If Croatia or Portugal qualify

And here's the table with possible coefficient values - goals scored in the play-offs not taken into account since they won't affect the pots.

D - draw, W - win - L - loss, Q - qualified team, P - play-off team

EURO 2012: Change in knock-out stage

You might remember a certain Spain - Russia played twice at EURO 2008. It happened because teams in groups A and B were separated from groups C and B until the final in order to equalize the number of rest days.

This was UEFA's explanation at that time:

"The reason for the format change this year is to equalise the rest periods during the knockout stage. Complaints were made in previous competitions that some teams gained an unfair advantage of up to a day and a half’s more rest between games as the tournament progressed."

For 2012 however, UEFA have returned to the old format, no longer separating the teams as in 2008.

See the official fixture list on UEFA.com.
