FIFA Ranking: October 2010 probable results (II)

Here are the probable results used for the October 2010 probable ranking (II). They are generated using the Elo Ratings.

I stopped at the official deadline (October 14th), but FIFA may include more matches - especially since they are continental qualifiers (Caribbean Championship matches). I've also included Guinea - Nigeria, although Nigeria are suspended by FIFA, because I think the Nigerian government will bow to FIFA's demands before the match.

Nigeria suspended by FIFA

FIFA have suspended Nigeria for government interference.

Nigeria were due to meet Guinea away on October 10th in an 2012 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier. The other teams in Group B are Madagascar and Ethiopia. Nigeria and Guinea both have 3 points after the first round of matches.

Combined Copa America possible in the future

Last week, Chuck Blazer (CONCACAF general secretary) said that “four or five years ago” there were talks involving potential sponsors about a 10/6 super-tournament, but that idea was rejected at the time.

Still, Blazer didn’t discard the idea for the future. “Other configurations might lend themselves to being possible,” he said. “Economic parameters would need to be met. The Gold Cup is the main source of revenue to support the youth programs and competitions that we do. If we did [a Copa Américas], we would have to see how it would replace what currently exists.”

O Globo jumped the gun (or maybe they know more) and announced that the 2015 Copa America could feature 10 teams from CONMEBOL and 6 from CONCACAF.

CONMEBOL determined to keep their allocation

It didn't take long. After Jack Warner announced CONCACAF have petitioned FIFA for 4 places (up from 3.5 they had for the 2010 World Cup), CONMEBOL announced they are determined to keep their 4.5 spots.

Interesting to see CAF also want to keep 6 spots for the 2014 finals. That's something I haven't heard before.

As you can see, Blatter was right when he said CONCACAF's bid for a fourth spot will be a struggle.

CONCACAF petition FIFA for four spots

It's official.

At the 2010 CONCACAF Extraordinary Congress, Jack Warner announced CONCACAF will try to get four places for Brazil 2014.

The CONCACAF Executive Committee a day earlier unanimously voted to petition FIFA for four spots in the 2014 World Cup.

"Our members made it very clear today that we need four places," Warner said. "Our region is united behind this position."

Sepp Blatter, invited at the Congress, said in his speech: "The Fifa Executive Committee will definitely take a closer look at the possibility of a fourth spot for CONCACAF".

It remains to be seen if the FIFA EXCO will alter the allocation of places for the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

2013 Africa Cup of Nations: Official qualifying system

CAF have announced the details of the qualifying system. Part of it was already described by Issa Hayatou last week.

Here's the official CAF announcement:

"Countries that do not qualify for the Orange CAN Gabon – Equatorial Guinea 2012 will play a first round eliminatory, with direct elimination, with a view to finding fifteen teams. The period from 15 January 2012 to 15 February 2012 was chosen for this first round.

If necessary, if the number of teams involved exceeds 45, a preliminary round would be organised. In this case, the criteria for the teams to undergo a preliminary round will depend on FIFA ranking.

The second round of qualifiers , also through direct elimination, will witness the fifteen qualified teams of the first round qualifiers to play against the fifteen teams (except Libya, host country of the 2013 edition and by consequence already qualified) that would have participated at the 2012 CAN, after complete draws.

If the Libyan team qualifies for the Orange CAN 2012, the fifteen other teams will directly play the second qualifying round of the 2013 CAN.

If Libya doesn’t qualify for the Orange CAN 2012, Gabon and Equatorial Guinea will play home and away play-off and the winner will participate in the second round qualifiers ."

Gabon and Equatorial Guinea will surely be rooting for Libya to qualify for the 2012 finals.
