FIFA ranking: June 2020 final preview

FIFA postponed/canceled all NT-matches for the June window. The UEFA EURO 2020 and the Copa America 2020 were earlier already postponed to June next year.

Already looking forward to the Autumn: there's no confirmed information about the UEFA Nations League and the schedule for the World Cup qualifiers. I guess NT football is at the very end of the line when it comes to reinstating football matches, behind closed doors or not.

FIFA will publish the (completely unchanged) June ranking next Thursday June 11th.

Stay safe and healthy everybody !

  1. We now know the dates for Nations League, Euro 2020(21?) playoffs and friendly matches for September, October and November.

I expect there will some changes to the September Nations League fixtures to minimise travel in the October window for the 16 playoff sides playing international triple headers and similarly in November as well.

  3. Is there any transparency on what CONCACAF will do? If they stick to the original guidance, I guess El Salvador sniped the last hexagonal spot from Canada without any matches played

  4. Well, the originally planned qualification format for CONCACAF with a hex couldn't be maintained, now that at least 6 MD's got cancelled this year. Latest concrete news from the press is that CONCACAF will propose a new format where the top 12 will be divided into 3 groups of 4 (with group winners qualified directly) and all teams beyond spot 12 fight with the 3 runners-up from the groups for the interconfederational play-off spot. Exact format of that process is yet unknown, but CONCACAF should come with more news very soon.

  5. Concacaf released the new format today.

  6. The Concavaf 8 team final group gives a greater chance to more teams than the format announced in 2019. A double Hex (like Asia have) And playoff for 3rd would have been my preference especially given the World Cup expansion due in 2026 and it also saves 2 match days.

    1. I agree. The new format is far better than the one originally proposed. At least every team in the confederation will get at least 4 matches, and the "Octagonal" should be interesting.
