FIFA ranking: current ranking

FIFA will publish the next ranking only on August 12th. This means that all matches played in the extended June window for World Cup qualifying in AFC, CONMEBOL and CONCACAF, together with the CONCACAF Nations League Finals and all friendlies, plus all matches from three complete continental final tournaments (EURO, Copa America and Gold Cup) all will count for this ranking. In total this August ranking will include around 355 matches.

A lot of changes are to be expected. Here is the current ranking, after the round of 16 in the EURO 2021 and the group phase of the Copa America. Just as a reminder: teams can't lose points in knock-out matches of final tournaments.

This current ranking is calculated with 281 played and included matches. See the 'already played' section in the probable results for a list of which already played matches are included and the points exchanged in each match.

By the way, FIFA has revamped the ranking section on their site. Guess what, the two decimals in ranking points they presented since March are gone again. Just flabbergasted....

  1. Thanks Ed. The match between Jordan Vs South Sudan in Arab cup qualifications scheduled on 21th of June, was missing from your list and ranking effect, knowing that it was forfeited game by FiFa considering jordan won 3/0.

    1. Tarek, could be that this forfeited match will be included, but I don't know for sure.
And as it is only considered as a friendly for ranking calculation purposes and it is not customary to include cancelled friendlies, I exclude this match for now. We will see in August...

  2. Ed, just wanna ask why teams won't lose points even if they lose at ko stages?

    1. It's in the regulations. FIFA has decided this is the way to go.
      Please see https://resources.fifa.com/image/upload/fifa-world-ranking-technical-explanation-revision.pdf?cloudid=edbm045h0udbwkqew35a

    2. It's likely just to keep from punishing teams who are playing extra games because they've progressed to the knockout stage. Otherwise your rating could end up being worse than at the end of the group stage, which doesn't seem correct for what FIFA's trying to do with rankings

      Delete
    3. Yeah, but it also leads to a calculation system that is not zero-sum like elo. This leads to the fact that teams who reach the knock-out stages, are not corrected anymore in strength when they lose there. So they are kept artificially at the higher position than they would be in reality.

This means the top teams in the FIFA ranking will create bigger gaps to followers and will easier remain at their high positions. The FIFA ranking becomes even more involatile at the top than the elo ranking, which in itself is quite involatile (stable) at the top already.

You will be able to see this in the upcoming August ranking already. The gap in points between number 1 and f.i. number 15 in the ranking will grow from 183 points to some 210 points.

    4. I think this lead to Belgium seems untouchable in the 1st position, even if they don't really deserve that. I'm curious so I tried to take out the "no-lose-points in knockout" rule, and find out that Belgium gained 47 points due to this rule, Chile and England also got more than 40 points. Brazil should be 1st by now, followed by Belgium, France, and Italy.

      Delete
  3. Alright I'm starting to buy your argument about why it's a wayward notion by FIFA. Because I can't imagine a situation where a team would intentionally change any of their strategies in a tournament just because of potential FIFA rankings. Games should be indicative of strength regardless
