Couple of problems in the September ranking

30 September 2011: Problems solved.

________________________

I expected FIFA to include the awarded results of the Tajikistan - Syria qualifiers for the September edition. It didn't quite happen. Don't know why.

Lesotho seem to be missing the August 20 draw against Swaziland. Wrote to FIFA about it. Hopefully they will answer.

Also unexpected differences for Qatar, Dominican Republic, Sudan, Curacao and Iraq.

FIFA Ranking: Brazil fall to 7th

The Argentina - Brazil friendly played on August 14 finished 0 - 0. This is the September 2011 top 10:

September 2011 rank - Team - September 2011 points - +/- Ranking - +/- Points

1 Spain 1605 1 42
2 Netherlands 1571 -1 -25
3 Germany 1290 0 -40
4 Uruguay 1184 1 10
5 Portugal 1158 3 98
6 Italy 1142 1 32
7 Brazil 1132 -1 -24
8 England 1089 -4 -88
9 Croatia 1057 1 48
10 Argentina 1024 -1 7

The ranking outside of the top 10 remains unchanged from the final preview.

A Seleção drop to 7th. This is their worst ever position in the last 18 years - since August 1993, the first edition of the FIFA ranking when they were ranked 8th.

Brazil were ranked 6th on three occasions: August 2008, September 2008 and August 2011.

Before anyone says: "This is because they will host the 2014 FIFA World Cup and they have no competitive matches", let me remind you the 2014 World Cup CONMEBOL qualifiers only start next month.

Elo and SPI both have Brazil 4th.

Next update: 14 October 2011 or later.

AFC have announced the draw for the 4th round will also be based on the FIFA rankings.

2014 F1FA World Cup Brazil™ - Asian Qualifiers Round 4 - Draw
The Committee decided to take the latest FIFA/Coca Cola rankings at the time of the Draw for Round 4 as F1FA Ranking has already been implemented for Round 3.

Yes, it's F1FA, not FIFA :)

The last match day of round 3 takes place on February 29, while the first match day of round 4 is scheduled for June 3.

I think the draw will take place in March, using the March FIFA ranking that will be released based on my calculations on March 15.

Norway "manipulating" the ranking

It seems Norway chose to play against Lithuania (see Google Translation to English in case your Norwegian is a bit rusty) in June and not a more dangerous opponent in order to keep their first pot position.

The Danish media and football officials consider this to be a "manipulation".

However, Norway didn't always play against weak/medium opponents and they didn't always win.

Lost to Poland, Croatia, Ukraine (twice), South Africa
Won against Republic of Ireland, France, Montenegro, Slovakia, Switzerland, South Africa, Finland, Germany.

In a July ranking counting only friendlies (see the second table), Norway were 3rd in Europe, behind Spain and Netherlands.

And if anyone asks - I had nothing to do with this, although I think the Norwegians did what they had to do - it is not illegal.
