  1. FIFA switches to using the Elo method for their rankings, effective immediately:

    We are looking forward to the new July 2018 preview as this one is no longer valid. :)

  2. The major reform of the FIFA ranking is finally here. Thanks nogomet.

    At first glance: almost the same as the elo ratings calculation but with following differences:
    - no effect of home advantage here;
    - no effect of goals scored (goal difference) here;
    - more types of matches are distinguished here;
    - the difference in ratings is divided by 600 (instead of 400 as in elo). This can work out both ways: points to exchange per match could be more or less than with elo;
    - it is not completely a zero-sum approach: losses in knock-out rounds of final competitions are excluded from the calculation.

    I will work out the consequences. A new preview of the July ranking will follow soon.

    1. From all the differences mentioned the most worrysome is the non-zero sum approach. That will definitely generate a 'rating inflation'...

      Nevertheless, it still looks like a positive change overall. Baby steps ;)

    2. The new calculation system will be used after the World Cup according to the FIFA website. No need to change your preview this time.

    3. In this item it is said that "a system that was today approved and will thus be inaugurated with the first official ranking following the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia.".
      I think they mean the July ranking by that. And that means that all matches normally calculated with the June ranking (all matches from June 4th onwards) now have to be calculated with the new method.

  3. I see a problem already with the exclusion of losses in KO rounds.
    The score of the top teams will go up with time and there will be a growing gap with the other teams.

    1. No Reason for the gap between the teams to grow, Elo difference converge into the real difference anyway...

  4. I dont think the ranking counted (sorry bad english) friendly matches.

  5. FIFA.... are they counting friendly games or not? For me, it does not seem so.

  6. Of course FIFA takes friendlies into account, both in the old method and in the new method. It would be a waste to disregard almost 50% of all matches.

  7. I mean, Turkey beat Iran and Norway has a 4 match winning streak. None of them got anything

  8. You are aware that this is a preview of the July ranking (calculated with the old method), made on June 9th ?

    Turkey-Iran (1:0) was played May 28th, so counted for the June ranking (deadline June 3rd).
    Tunisia-Turkey (2:2) was played June 1st, so counted for the June ranking.
    Russia-Turkey (1:1) was played June 5th, so counted for the July ranking. It was the only match of Turkey counting for the July ranking and made them lose points (from 706 in June to 669 in July).

    Iceland-Norway (2:3) was played June 2nd, so counted for the June ranking.
    Norway-Panama (1:0) was played June 6th, so counted for the July ranking. It was the only match of Norway counting for the July ranking and made them jump from 596 points in June to 653 points in July.

    Both match results were known at the time of writing and no other matches were scheduled for both countries, so I could calculate their July points exactly: 669 for Turkey and 653 for Norway, friendlies and standard devaluation of points (inherent to the old calculation method) included.

    You call a jump of 57 points for Norway in a month because of one friendly win nothing ?
