  1. Hello, I just want to know that last month, India's 31 points have been deducted because they havnt played a match since 1 year. But why this month also their 47 points have been deducted? fifa deducts points for 1 month only FOR NOT PLAYING 5 MATCHES FOR THE LAST 1 YEAR or is the rule is to deduct poins for 2 months if a team doesnt play any international match for a year? this is real injustice. India is such a good team and they doesnt deserve to be in 160 from 138.
    PLEASE REPLY SIR

  3. Hello Abhishek,

The main reason India will lose 47 points between the 11 August and 15 September rankings is because 11 of their past matches (5 from 17-29 August 2007, 1 from 13 August 2008, and most especially the 5 from 19-31 August 2009) will drop into older yearly time frames, decreasing their weighting in the formula.

For example, in the August 2010 ranking, India's 5 matches from August 2009 were the only ones in the 1.0 time frame (that is, the current year). Their value was:
    1.0 * (0 + 127.5 + 127.5 + 0 + 178.5) / 5 = 86.7 points

However, in the September 2010 ranking, those 5 matches move into the 0.5 time frame (that is, the previous year). The January 2009 loss to Hong Kong is also in this time frame. The new value of these 6 matches is:
    0.5 * (0 + 0 + 127.5 + 127.5 + 0 + 178.5) / 6 = 36.125 points

    That's a loss of 50 points.

Also, with regard to losing points "for not playing 5 matches" in a given 12-month period, there is not a direct penalty of a certain number of points deducted. Rather, teams can lose points indirectly, because a minimum denominator of 5 matches is used for computing the yearly time frame averages. For example, since India's only matches in the last 12 months are the 2 losses to Thailand, their current 1.0 time frame value would be calculated like this:
    1.0 * (0 + 0) / 5 = 0 points,
dividing by 5 instead of 2 (as if there were 3 more losses). (This only makes a difference if there is at least 1 win or draw in the time frame.)

I hope this info is helpful. Best of luck to India (despite a very tough draw) in January!

  4. Thanks for such an descriptive reply, thanks a lot, just want to know the ans of 2 questions?

1)will fifa deduct India's points in the next month also or the phase of deducting points is gone?

2)India will be playing 4 friendlies against all much higher ranked teams within the next ranking period:
    Namibia-116
    Gambia-91
    Vietnam-124
    Yemen-106
my question is if India loses some matches being ranked 160, does fifa deduct points for losing matches against higher ranked teams?

Hope India will earn huge points and get back to the 130 zone by defeating these so much higher ranked nations in the coming ranking period.
Thanks for ur cooperation Sir, actually I really care for my team India, thats why always keep worrying about the ranking.
    Thanks!

  5. Why did El Salvador fall down so much (10 rankings)?

  6. @Alex

    Thank you again! :)

    @Abhishek

There's good news for India - even if you lose the next four games, you'll still gain two points, as loses against Japan and Lebanon get devalued. :)
If India win the 4 games you mentioned, they will have 238 points. That would be good enough for 112th place - this month.

    @La Selecta

El Salvador lost 108 points and 24 places because the WCQ win against Costa Rica (Sep 9, 2009) lost half its value.

    ReplyDelete
  7. But with Costa Rica they WON. though they tied(lose by penalties) with Honduras (september 4, 2010) wouln't that count. COULD YOU DO THE MATH.

  8. @La Selecta

I did say: "El Salvador lost 108 points and 24 places because the WCQ win against Costa Rica (Sep 9, 2009) lost half its value."

I know El Salvador won against Costa Rica. That match dropped from 100% to 50%.

Regarding the Honduras match - it was only a friendly and with El Salvador losing after PSO, it's considered a draw thus bringing few points.

    ReplyDelete
  9. BUT REALLY WHY SO MUCH,24 PLACES???
Was it that it is racism?

    ReplyDelete
  10. Racism? No, it's based on formula available to the public. While the formula has its flaws, it's public so FIFA can't fiddle with the rankings.

Win your next friendlies, get a decent result in the Copa Centroamericana and you'll climb again.
