FIFA Ranking: October 2009 final preview

Point totals for teams from the top 20 of the October 2007 ranking should be 100% correct. For the others, there's the issue of historical rankings published before July 2006.

I'm pretty sure FIFA will include all matches up to October 14th.

Portugal return to the top 10, with Russia going the other way.

Best movers:

41 - Faroe Islands
25 - Armenia
23 - Haiti

Worst movers:

-38 - Libya
-31 - Sierra Leone
-28 - Congo and Niger

Best movers in the top 50:

18 - Colombia

Cameroon take 1st spot in Africa from Côte d'Ivoire, with Algeria taking 4th place. Algeria are now 2nd in the Arab World, one place behind Egypt and could get 1st place with a good result in Cairo next month.

  1. If either Portugal or France fails to qualify for the World Cup, and seeing that croatia has already crashed out, would the U.S. be able to pass these countries with a friendly win over Denmark coming up? Also...how did the U.S. stay at the same rank as last month? With a 2-1 home win over El Salvador, 1-0 @ Trinidad and 3-2 @ fellow World Cup participant Honduras, all WC Qualifying matches. PLUS a 2-2 draw with Costa Rica. 3-0-1 in World Cup qualifying how do you not move up?

  2. Geez, why the drastic drop for Serbia losing to a meaningless game to Lithuania and dropping down to 20th place?
I don't get this FIFA system they use to rank teams, I just don't get it.
Croatia still up there? This is a joke for ranking teams.

  3. Anonymous: Wins over teams ranked at #35, #72, and #82 and a draw against team #43 isn't exactly evidence that the U.S. should be placed above its current #11 ranking.

  4. true, those wins arnt over the likes of top 25 teams...i understand. But they are wins in qualifying, something Argentina, who is ranked ahead of us, has not been doing so much of. Or lets say croatia, who didnt make the world cup. The fact is, we are one of the few teams in the top 15 who did not lose any games during this ranking period. I dont think croatia is deserving of a higher ranking that the U.S. The U.S. is not only a stronger squad, but has had better results over the past year, AND qualified for the world cup. I know they are in UEFA, and we are in CONCACAF, but honestly...few will can honestly say croatia is better than the United States.

  5. @RetroMikey

The FIFA ranking doesn't know about the meaning of a match :) Sure, Serbia was already qualified, but the formula doesn't take this into account.

    @Anonymous

USA did gain 51 points, but they were some way behind in September and Portugal managed to gain more points and overtake the US.

It's only the October matches, because there are other matches losing value, moving from a time frame to the other, averages going up and down.
